DIAGNOdent Cavity Detecting Laser

What is the DIAGNOdent?

The DIAGNOdent is a laser that is used to detect tooth decay and cavities when they are in their earliest stages. By using this advanced technology, dentists are now able to discover small cavities and treat them conservatively before they become more aggressive and expensive. The DIAGNOdent has proven to be a reliable and comfortable way for dentists to help patients maintain a happy and healthy smile for a lifetime.

How Does it Work?

The DIAGNOdent uses a precise low-level laser to scan all of your teeth quickly and efficiently. It measures the fluorescence within each tooth, gives off an audio signal, and creates a digital readout when the laser comes across a cavity. Healthy teeth give off little to no sound and low numbers while decayed teeth give off louder sounds and higher numbers that increase with decay severity. With the DIAGNOdent, dentists can confidently use a device that is more effective and more accurate than visual inspection and older techniques.

What Makes it Unique?

Due to the widespread use of fluoride, bacteria has begun to decay the inner part of teeth without visibly effecting the outer enamel surface. This has caused cavities to be invisible to the naked eye and has allowed decay to go undetected for extended periods of time. It isn’t until the cavity gets so severe that it breaks through the enamel and becomes visible or it begins to cause the patient pain. With the DIAGNOdent, cavities are able to be detected in earlier stages when they are too small to be detected with visual exams. Early detection and minimal treatment prevent decay from becoming more advanced and painful. At our office, cavity screenings with the DIAGNOdent are given at every oral exam to help ensure every patient’s mouth is healthy!
